History
In 1914, Wheaton women combined several small clubs to establish the League of Women’s Clubs. Their wish was to broaden their cultural, civic, and philanthropic activities. Charter members included many Wheaton pioneer families. The first president was Mrs. Mary Dannet Clifford. By 1916, there were 110 members. The club was restructured into departments that included Home and Education, Literature, Arts and Music. The Clifford home at 426 North Main Street was purchased in 1927 as a community house. It was sold in 1942.
In the years since the Department Club was founded, community interest has continued. City beautification projects, yearly participation in the Salvation Army Tag Day. Lap robes, calendars, cards, and Christmas gifts are contributed to the DuPage Convalescent Center. Christmas collection for Family Shelter Services is an annual event. Many other local and national philanthropic causes are also supported. In the past, the Department Club sponsored the Junior Women’s Club. A room at Central DuPage Hospital was contributed. Wheaton Drama Club was an outgrowth of Department Club’s Play Reading Group.
